Contest Themes and Category Descriptions
Our Online Photo Club focuses on three main categories that provide a variety of creative possibilities. Each month, the featured contest will highlight one of these themes, but you are welcome to explore all of them over time. The descriptions below are meant to guide you as you select which category best fits your photograph. They are flexible, not strict rules, so if your image overlaps several themes, simply choose the one that feels most appropriate.
Nature & Landscapes
The Nature & Landscapes category includes outdoor scenes that highlight the beauty of the natural world. This can range from wide, sweeping views of mountains, forests, or lakes to close-up images of leaves, flowers, and other small details. Weather and light play an important role in this category; early morning fog, dramatic sunsets, and soft evening light can all add mood to your photos. You do not need to travel to a famous location to create a strong landscape image. A local park, backyard garden, or quiet street lined with trees may offer just as many interesting compositions. Try to think about lines, shapes, and patterns when you frame your shots, and experiment with different angles to show familiar scenes in a fresh way.
People & Portraits
The People & Portraits category focuses on images that highlight human expression, personality, and connection. This might include traditional posed portraits, candid everyday moments, or group shots that capture friends and family enjoying time together. You can photograph people indoors or outdoors, and the background can be either simple or detailed, depending on the story you want to tell. Pay attention to lighting on the face, as soft, even light often works better than strong shadows. When you photograph people, remember to be respectful and obtain permission when possible, especially for close-up images. Consider how clothing, posture, and surroundings contribute to the mood of the portrait, and think about what you want viewers to feel when they look at your photo.
Action & Sports
The Action & Sports category is designed for photos that show motion, energy, and activity. This can include organized sports such as soccer, basketball, or swimming, as well as everyday actions like running, jumping, cycling, or playing at the park. Capturing movement can be challenging, so this category offers a great opportunity to practice timing and focus. You might freeze motion using a fast shutter speed or create a sense of speed by allowing some intentional blur. Pay attention to where the action is happening in the frame, and try to anticipate key moments, such as a player kicking a ball or a person mid-jump. Even simple scenes, like someone walking through a busy street, can become powerful action images when you carefully choose your angle and composition.
